Plasterboard Disposal Rules

Why can't plasterboard go in a mixed skip? Understanding gypsum recycling and landfill bans.

Plasterboard contains gypsum (sulphate). If mixed with biodegradable waste in landfill, it produces toxic hydrogen sulphide gas.

Bag It Separately

We provide dedicated bags for plasterboard waste to ensure it is recycled safely back into new plasterboard.

The Rules for Builders

Since 2009, the Environment Agency has banned plasterboard from mixed skips. If you put plasterboard in a mixed skip, the skip company may refuse to take it or charge you a contamination fee.

How We Handle It

Mme Waste Ldn offers dedicated plasterboard collection. We collect it separately and take it to specialized gypsum recycling centers.

Tips for Disposal:

  • Keep it dry (wet plasterboard is heavier and harder to recycle).
  • Remove tiles/wallpaper where possible.
  • Book a dedicated collection.

If you have mixed renovation waste too, keep plasterboard separate and tell us roughly how many bags or sheets you have. We’ll route it correctly and can provide a Waste Transfer Note.
