Plasterboard contains gypsum (sulphate). If mixed with biodegradable waste in landfill, it produces toxic hydrogen sulphide gas.

The Rules for Builders
Since 2009, the Environment Agency has banned plasterboard from mixed skips. If you put plasterboard in a mixed skip, the skip company may refuse to take it or charge you a contamination fee.
How We Handle It

Tips for Disposal:
- Keep it dry (wet plasterboard is heavier and harder to recycle).
- Remove tiles/wallpaper where possible.
- Book a dedicated collection.
Plasterboard pricing & load preparation
Plasterboard is priced per sheet or per sealed builder's bag depending on condition. Whole sheets in stacks are cheapest; broken, damp, or mixed-with-rubble boards cost more because the recycling plant needs cleaner segregation. Tape, screws, and timber battens should be stripped where possible.
- Dry intact stacks: best rate per sheet
- Bagged offcuts: builder's bags, sealed and labelled
- Mixed rubble/plaster: more expensive — must go to specialist treatment, not standard muck-away
Council vs licensed carrier for plasterboard
Most council household waste recycling centres accept plasterboard in small quantities at the skip, but quantities above a boot-load may be turned away or require a commercial permit. Householders doing full refits can quickly exceed the free allowance.
A licensed carrier with a registered gypsum waste route provides a written transfer note and delivers to a permitted plasterboard recycler — the paper face, gypsum core, and backing are all separated and reused. For anything over a few sheets, it is usually faster and cleaner than multiple trips to the tip with a loaded car.
